New RPS Proposals under Consideration by Congress
Enactment of a renewable portfolio standard (”RPS”) has been under consideration in Congress and elsewhere for several years. In a nutshell, an RPS would require that a certain percentage of electricity sold to retail consumers must be obtained from renewable sources, such as wind, biomass, solar, and geothermal. Several states have enacted their own RPS, but to date no action has been taken at the federal level.
Press Release from Solar Night Industries
12.28.2007-Solar Night Industries (PINKSHEETS: SLND), a renewable energy company formed to accelerate the adoption of Modern Energy Solutions by providing design and product solutions, had a challenge. Project Manager Alan Brani of Solar Night began working with their Michigan Installer/Partner, Mark Bauer of Bauer Power, who was concerned about finding an optimal roof mount location for a solar thermal (hot water) installation. Working with Bauer, it was agreed the best solution would be a “ground mount” system for the solar panels. Solar Night found it difficult to find a viable solution from their extensive list of suppliers. See Full Press.
Harnessing Bacteria To Make Fuel Cells More Efficient
Bacteria that generate significant amounts of electricity could be used in microbial fuel cells to provide power in remote environments or to convert waste to electricity. Researchers isolated bacteria with large numbers of tiny projections called pili which were more efficient at transferring electrons to generate power in fuel cells than bacteria with a smooth surface.
